Publisher Slitherine has been making big moves in the strategy game space in recent times and promising more titles targeting specific niches with upcoming releases like Broken Arrow. Now, we could be looking at another Heroes of Might & Magic spiritual successor with Stormbinders.
The turn-based strategy game set in a fantasy world comes from studios Destructive Creations and Innominate Games, who are promising a “dynamic weather conditions” system that should help Stormbinders leave a unique mark on the subgenre while keeping the rest of the formula mostly intact. So far, it’s been teased that the campaign will be linear and that the tactical combat will be hex-based. Of course, you should also expect “diverse factions and units” on top of the traditional castle management mechanics that can’t be left behind.
We’ll be learning more about Stormbinders later today at 4:00 PM CET, when Slitherine plans to reveal the game to the world fully. You can watch the YouTube stream (or video if you’re late to the party) here:
Before we get our hands on the game, we can safely say the hand-drawn art (here’s hoping for no AI use) is the clear highlight. At the same time, the world map visuals are reminiscent of Songs of Conquest’s gorgeous presentation, and we can’t criticize anyone for trying to put their spin on such a good-looking turn-based game. In any case, it’s a good thing that some other developers are playing in this space before Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era arrives later this year.
The return of the Ubisoft-owned series shouldn’t be an issue though. Olden Era is planning to launch in early access, and it’s sporting modern 3D visuals instead of an old-fashioned 2D look that should be more appealing to veterans who are skeptical about the chances of a proper HoMM comeback.
