Sonic Frontiers is the first ever immersive open-world gameplay experience from the iconic franchise. Coming out on November 8th, it also marks the 30th anniversary of the world’s favourite blue hedgehog. Sonic Frontiers transports players to the mysterious Starfall Islands to retrieve scattered Chaos Emeralds.
Dashing across alternative landscapes from waterfalls to deserts to forests, players become Sonic on his journey after falling through a wormhole and becoming separated from his friends, Amy Rose and Tails. There’s ancient secrets, colossal threats, and a barrage of new enemies and bosses to take on in what promises to be “high velocity, open-zone freedom”. Unsurprisingly, Sonic Frontiers gameplay reveal at Gamescom was the second most-viewed YouTube trailer on YouTube after 24 hours with over 1.4 million views.
Like any Sonic franchise game, there are characters old and new to meet and Sonic Frontiers is no different. As you ascend upon the beauty of Sonic’s brand-new open-world game, there’s a few faces you’ll be pleased to see again, and a few you won’t have met before. Here’s the rundown of everything we know so far about Sonic Frontiers characters and the voice actors that will bring these iconic figures to life.
Sonic Frontiers characters
The current list of confirmed/rumoured Sonic Frontiers characters are:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sage
- Koco
- Dr. Eggman
- Miles “Tails” Prower
- Amy Rose
- Knuckles
- Big the Cat
Sonic the Hedgehog - Roger Craig Smith
The only playable character in the game is Sonic. So far, we know that playing as Sonic will be a whole new experience taking place in an open-world, functioning with an all-new battle system, utilising skill tree upgrades, and fighting enemies that have never been encountered before.
We also know that Sonic the Hedgehog has a voice, as seen in the story trailer, and that voice is Roger Craig Smith. No surprises really as Roger has voiced the iconic hedgehog since 2010, becoming the third official voice of the character. Also famously known for his voice acting in both the Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil series’, Roger will be returning once again to reprise his role.
Sage - Megumi Hayashibara
<p</p>
It seems the second most talked about character of Sonic Frontiers is ‘mysterious stranger’, Sage. A floating human girl with white hair, a black dress, and red cyber energy radiating from her body, legs, hands, eyes, and hair appears in the story trailer and is seen offering Sonic words of warning and caution for his adventure.
Whilst it’s clear she seems concerned for Sonic’s wellbeing, it’s not yet determined whether she’s friend or foe. Sage is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara, famed for her voice acting across many iconic franchises including but not limited to Pokémon, Cowboy Bebop, and Slayers.
Koco
Whilst Sonic and Sage seem to be the Sonic Frontiers’ characters we know the most about right now, one character to emerge from developer reveals is Koco, a stone coconut-y looking friend.
Whilst Koco’s don’t appear to have voices, they are there to be protected, collected, and returned safely to Hermit and Elder Koco in exchange for boosts in stats such as attack power, health, speed, and max ring count.
Dr. Eggman - Mike Pollock
According to IGN, Sonic Frontiers’ writer, Ian Flynn, confirmed that Dr. Eggman will appear in Sonic Frontiers despite the lack of seeing him in any trailer so far.
He says, “I try to find something fun in all the characters, but letting loose with Dr. Eggman is always a delight. We get to take his character in some interesting directions in Sonic Frontiers.”
It’s also been confirmed that Dr. Eggman is voiced by Mike Pollock, the man who has famously voiced this villain since 2003 for the franchise.
Miles “Tails” Prower - Colleen O’Shaughnessey
Given the storyline that Sonic becomes separated from Amy and Tails, we know that Tails is confirmed. What we’re yet to see is any sign of Tails in any of the gameplay demos or footage. Colleen O’Shaughnessey has been confirmed to continue voicing Tails though since taking up the role in 2014 and taking part in two live-action film adaptations.
Amy Rose - Cindy Robinson
Also seen in the Gamescom demo is Amy Rose and, as mentioned, is a character that Sonic becomes split from when entering the wormhole.
Twitter user, @whyyydreed, posted this first look at an Amy-specific mission in the new game whilst playing the Gamescom demo.
Sonic media specialist, Justin Thormann, also confirmed the return of Cindy Robinson as the English dub for Amy Rose.
Knuckles - Dave Mitchell
Knuckles is set to return to Sonic Frontiers, at least in an animated prologue aptly named the Sonic Frontiers Prologue. Presence as a character in the actual game is yet to be confirmed.
And, according to Twitter, after a now-deleted tweet, Dave Mitchell reportedly confirmed he would be reprising his voice acting role as Knuckles after his debut as the character in Team Sonic Racing.
Big the Cat
Finally, during Gamescom 2022, players were delighted to spot 1998’s Dreamcast character, Big the Cat, during the playable Sonic Frontiers demo.
Twitter user, @Bibouboul, posted a screenshot confirming his presence pictured alongside holding his fishing rod, rumoured to be part of an optional mini-game. In an even more recent leak, the fishing mini-game can be seen, with Big the Cat playing host.
