STORY OF SEASONS: Friends of Mineral Town is somewhat a farming simulator. You have inherited your grandpa’s old farm and moved to the charming village of Mineral Town. Dive in and experience small town living with everything from local festivals and cooking contests, to making friends and getting married.
For a game about the simple life, there’s quite a lot to learn and master. In this guide we’ll be looking at fishing. If you’ve started playing already you might have noticed you don’t even have a Fishing Rod but don’t worry, good things do in fact come to those who wait.
How To Get a Fishing Rod
At some point during the first few week of game time, you get the opportunity to acquire a fishing rod. To do this head over to Mineral Beach on the east coast of the map, and talk to Zach. He should be inside his house between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Don’t worry if you’re further into the game, the chance doesn’t disappear.
Using the fishing pole is easy. Move to a body of water and face towards it. With the fishing pole equipped, press the use tool button (default - right click) and watch your character cast away. When you get a nibble, an exclamation point appears above your head and the bob bobs up and down. Press the use tool button again to try and reel in your catch. Sometimes you’ll get branches, cans, and fish bones.
Don’t worry if the fish gets away - it happens - and you can just try again. If it keeps happening you might have to wait for an upgraded fishing pole to fish that particular spot. However, if you’ve been there for a while with no bites at all, you might be in one of the waterways without fish so move along and dip your tackle in one of the prime spots below…
Fishing Spots
The Ocean - Mineral Beach has a prime pier for fishing and is the best place to catch the larger fish.
Downstream - You can fish in the river flowing at the edge of your farm.
The Spring - Head over the the mine and dip your rod in the water at the nearby spring.
The Waterfall - The base of the waterfall is a scenic spot to cast your line.
Upstream - The bridge to the mountain provides a small fishing spot to the side.
The Lake - The large lake to the west has a long shoreline to fish at.
Secret Forest - The town’s central forest has a pond that you can fish in.
Upgrades
Like all tools, your fishing rod can be upgraded at the forge to the north of your farm. It’s open between 10am and 4pm every day but Thursday and can work on a single tool at a time. You unlock new upgrades through experience and then hand over your rod along with the required materials and some coin. This process starts at 1 day but takes longer the higher the tier. Note that it’s faster to upgrade them a single tier at a time instead of jumping straight to a higher level… although with the slow speed of fishing experience, that probably wouldn’t be a problem here.
With the upgrade complete, you gain access to the special skill activated by holding the use tool button until it’s charged up. In the fishing rod’s case, this ability makes you more able to catch bigger fish without them getting away. This is required for fishing in The Spring that needs at least a gold fishing pole (level 4) to be effective.
