Publisher and developer Firefly Studios has announced Stronghold: Definitive Edition, a remake of the first entry in its long-running castle sim series.
Headed to PC on November 7, via Steam, Stronghold: Definitive Edition has been “carefully rebuilt using the source artwork, remastered music, returning voice talent and veteran developers of the first entry in this legendary series.”

The title launches with a blend of new and familiar elements, including overhauled artwork that provides higher-quality unit sprites, building and terrain models while remaining faithful to the original’s excellent art style.
Stronghold: Definitive Edition launches with the classic military and economic campaigns, but also brings with it a brand new 14-mission narrative campaign that was designed by Firefly Studios founders Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette.
In addition, a 10-mission Castle Trail will also be available, tasking us with either defending or laying siege to historical castles such as Warwick, Dunnottar, and Marksburg.
The remake introduces a host of technical enhancements and quality of life improvements, while allowing us to customize our experience “with individual settings for many of their preferred game features and controls”.
Steam multiplayer is also supported at launch, allowing us to easily hop into matches. Better yet, Steam Workshop support means that player-made maps will contribute to the title’s longevity.
“We have been itching to build this game for years now,” said Simon Bradbury, Co-Founder and Design Lead at Firefly Studios.
“It’s been exciting getting to work with some of the team from back in 1999. Coders, artists, even some of the original voice actors! Stronghold is over 20 years old now, but getting our hands on many areas of the game like updated art, better UI, UX improvements and new campaign missions, these are all things that make us happy. This is the start of a new era for Stronghold and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.”
