Much like Stray’s popularity quickly made it one of July 2022’s biggest releases, it also spawned a handful of first mods that seek to add features which players would have wanted to see at launch.
This happened in spite of the game launching without any sort of official mod support or tools, clearly showing its community’s dedication. Stray’s first mods largely revolve around an initial attempt at introducing co-op to the third-person game as well as adding several different looks for its protagonist.
Stray Mods
Perhaps the most notable Stray mod out there is one that attempts to introduce local splitscreen co-op.
Setting it up might involve a bit of effort and it does come with limitations – like the second player being unable to see the UI or getting stuck during level transitions –, but if you wanted to play through the game with a friend by your side, it is currently your best bet.
That being said, Stray was designed as a single-player game, so forcing co-op into it might involve a bit of weirdness. If you’re find with exploring its cybercity all by your lonesome, you may be interested in the plethora of cat customization mods out there.
There are quite a few to choose from, but it’s hard to start the list with any other mod than the one which turns the protagonist into Garfield.
Another Stray mod shows us GTA: San Andreas’ Carl Johnson as we’ve never seen him before, while this one turns the protagonist into a sphynx cat.
Other Stray mods give the cat glasses – although that may not help it converse any better with B-12 –, turn the drone and backpack invisible, or add additional textures for customization purposes.
All of the Stray mods above are hosted on Nexus Mods, where you’ll also find other picks to choose from.
While we wait for Thomas the Tank Engine to inevitably make his way into the game, read through our articles covering obtaining all the sheet music pieces in Stray and the game’s Steam Deck compatibility.
