The Long Dark’s survival mode has grown bigger thanks to its Perilous Constraint free update, which is now live. Players hopping into the game will find the Blackrock Region map has been added, increasing the game world’s size to no as many as 55 km².
The Long Dark’s Blackrock map was previously featured in the fourth episode of its Wintermute story. In survival mode, the region is connected to Pleasant Valley via a new transition zone, and to Timberwolf Mountain thanks to a cave system.
Like its peers, the Blackrock Region comes with its share of points of interest and locations to discover. Although destroyed, the Blackrock Penitentiary can still be accessed and happens to house quite a few resources, inside its prison block as well as the areas surrounding it.
As you explore The Long Dark’s Blackrock map, you’ll discover a power plant, substation, alongside new shelters. You’ll also face a large number of Timberwolf patrols, which is why you’ll want to track down the two new items introduced in the Perilous Constraint update.
The Ballistic Vest counts as the game’s first piece of protective gear, providing higher defense against physical damage. You’ll be less vulnerable to bear, wolf, and moose attacks while wearing it, but it slows down your movement speed quite significantly and is also fairly heavy.
The Noisemaker is an explosive device that’s best used to deter Timberwolves, especially when they threaten to surround you. The loud noise of its explosion temporarily scares attackers, but you’ll want to make sure you don’t hold onto it for too long after you light its fuse.
You can only craft the device at the ammunition bench, one of which can be found in Blackrock Penitentiary’s workshop, making the new map a place you will likely want to visit sooner or later.
