Valheim’s arsenal is quite vast, which is good news for a game that full of murderous creatures. But while most of the swords, axes, maces, and shields enable you to protect against attacks and fight back quite efficiently, the Abyssal Harpoon stands out thanks to the utility it brings to battles.
Valheim’s Abyssal Harpoon is classified as a Spear-type weapon and, while it’s very capable of piercing opponents, that’s not the main reason why you want to consider carrying it with you while exploring the world. The damage it deals is actually quite small, but that’s because of its other, more important use.
Landing a hit with the Abyssal Harpoon links the target to the player, enabling you to drag it around. This is great both when dealing with retreating enemies in Valheim or when you’re looking to bring them to a specific spot.
The chain that links you to your target will break if its tension becomes too high or if it comes into contact with solid objects or terrain. You can also manually break the link by attacking.
Valheim’s Abyssal Harpoon might not suddenly become your primary weapon choice, but its uses shouldn’t be understimated. It’s required if you’re planning to get Serpent Scales, as killing Serpents in the water results in the materials sinking. The harpoon enables dragging them to land, which also renders them quite helpless.
The weapon also comes in handy when you really need animals to go into designated pens or as a crowd control tool, when playing alongside friends.
Crafting the Abyssal Harpoon in Valheim requires that you have access to a level 2 workbench. As far as materials go, you’ll first need to collect 30 Chitin, obtained from mining Abyssal Barnacles found on the back of Krakens (or Leviathans, as they’re also known). They’re large living islands found in Ocean biomes.
You’ll also need 8 Fine Wood, obtained from Birch and Oak trees, alongside 3 Leather Scraps, which you get by hunting Boars. There currently doesn’t seem to be any way to upgrade Valheim’s Abyssal Harpoon.
