Valheim’s vast, blue ocean biomes might appear rather empty at first, but Leviathans give players a very good reason to craft boats and head out to sea. Also known as Kraken or sea turtles, these creatures are, currently, the only source of a particularly useful material.
Valheim’s Leviathan is proof that not all of the survival game’s creatures are out to get you. Docile and rather massive, they appear to players as large islands, usually found in the deeper portions of the ocean biomes.
You can safely climb on top of any Kraken in Valheim. You’ll know you’ve reached one when, aside from moss and trees, you’ll notice Abyssal barnacles around you. These are also the main reason why you’ll want to seek the creatures out. With a pickaxe equipped, you can mine them for Chitin, which currently cannot be obtained anywhere else.
Chitin is required when crafting the Abyssal Harpoon and Abyssal Razor, two weapons you’ll eventually want to get your hands on. The former is particularly useful when dealing with Serpents, a rather hostile creature that also lurks in the ocean biome.
While Valheim’s Leviathans won’t mind you dragging your feet across their backs all that much, the moment you start hitting Abyssal barnacles with a pickaxe, there’s a chance that they’ll begin submerging.
Before they do so, they’ll make a rather distinctive sound. They’re also polite enough to give you around 20 seconds to get back to your boat, provided you’re not too lost in mining. Kraken spawn at random spots in the ocean biome, but their size makes them rather easy to spot from afar.
Valheim is available now on PC, in Steam Early Access.
