Warhammer 40,000: Darktide march towards redemption continues with today’s free Nightmares & Visions update, which introduces the new wave-based Mortis Trials activity alongside changes to the existing Havoc mode and a reworked talent tree for the lumbering Ogryn class.
Darktide’s Mortis Trials aim to offer a different experience than regular missions by leaning on “crazy wave compositions and roguelike elements.” Accessed from Sefoni’s Reverie on the Mourningstar, each trial allows us to select randomized abilities and buffs.

Before each battle we can choose an Indulgence that buffs our characters. Pyrokinetic and Voltaic enhance their specific type of elemental damage while Fulminator blends both. Death Dealer then improves our close-quarters performance while Colossus keeps us in the fight for longer.
Darktide’s Mortis Trials span 12 waves whose difficulty gradually increases, every third one introducing an objective that, when completed, grants “supplies and stronger buffs, culminating in a final gauntlet where players unleash their full potential.”
Aside from the pleasure of blasting more heretics to bits, the activity also unlocks memory echoes, revealing “secret information on some of the main characters present on the Mourningstar.”
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide’s Nightmares & Visions update also polishes the existing end-game Havoc mode overhauling its rank system in an effort to make progression “clearer and more rewarding for all players.”
Every participant will now rank up as long as they meet the new progression criteria, while a rotation system for mission pools and mutators in Havoc challenges aims to provide a campaign-style experience.
This, however, does come at a cost, as ranks will be reset “to the nearest threshold based on the highest rank reached since the introduction of Havoc last year.”
In addition, Darktide’s Havoc mode is also getting the following four new mutators:
- Heinous Rituals: Heretics are attempting to summon a new kind of Daemonhost, disrupt their rituals, or face the consequences.
- The Encroaching Garden: specific enemies will heal their allies. If these are not dispatched promptly, they will rapidly regenerate the ranks of the heretics.
- Rampaging Enemies: Fallen enemies empower their allies with a surge of strength, making tactical planning crucial to avoid being overwhelmed.
- Enraging Elites: injured Elites will become enraged, increasing their attack and movement speed, and giving them immunity to crowd control effects.
Darktide’s Nightmares & Visions update also overhauls the Ogryn’s talent tree, offering a broader variety of potential builds. If you’re all about melee, you’re no longer locked into focusing on heavy attacks, as new picks support both light and heavy strikes.
“Tank-focused players now have more tools to define their playstyle,” the publisher explains, “while ranged builds benefit from a reworked Burst Limiter Override, allowing for stronger explosive and sustained fire builds.”
The Ogryn now has better movement and survivability, since it can stagger enemies when dodging while new passives provide more damage resistance and coherency Toughness regeneration.
Hybrid playstyles are also encouraged, making the class more adaptable than it’s ever been.
Lastly, a limited-time event called A Day At The Theatre is set to go live after the update’s launch. As expected, it revolves around the wave-based Mortis Trials activity, so there’s an extra reason to dip in and see what this new addition has to offer.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide’s Nightmares & Visions update goes live today across all platforms.
