Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has no shortage of foes and perilous situations, but if you’re looking to add even more challenge to your grimdark adventures, its Grim Darkness mode happily obliges once its release date comes around.
Rogue Trader’s Grim Darkness mode essentially introduces an Ironman-style challenge to Owlcat Games’ sprawling RPG, limiting your playthrough to a single save that automatically updates when you exit.

Available “for all owners of the base game alongside the [Void Shadows] expansion,” it forces those who choose to activate it to live with the consequences of their actions. Naturally, this also means that, should your entire party or Voidship fall in battle, that marks the end of your journey in the mode.
On PC, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’s Grim Darkness release date occurred at the same time as that of the Void Expansion DLC. When starting a new game, you’ll find a dedicated option allowing you to choose whether to toggle it on or leave it off.

Console players will have to wait a bit longer before having access to the mode.
As noted on Reddit by Community Manager OwlcatStarrok “console co-op is in the final phases of development and is expected before the end of the year. Hopefully, it won’t take long to port the Grim Darkness mode there as well.”
At release, Rogue Trader’s Grim Darkness mode is only available for single-player playthroughs, although the developer does intend to bring it to co-op mode at a later stage.
Finishing the campaign with it activated grants the “There Is Only War…” achievement alongside a powerful amulet that you can use on future playthroughs.
As opposed to similar modes in the developer’s other games, it is not affected by difficulty. In addition, saves with it turned on can be converted to regular saves at any point, although the process is irreversible.
Lastly, should your party court death, you will get one last chance to convert the save to a regular one, although that also means forfeiting your opportunity to obtain the associated achievement and amulet.
