Warner Bros. Games has canceled its Wonder Woman game and shut down developer Monolith Productions, the studio behind titles such as F.E.A.R. and Middle-earth: Shadow of War .
Multiversus developer Player First Games and WB San Diego are also set to be closed, their staff joining thousands of other video game industry workers who have lost their jobs since 2023.
Warner Bros. Cancels Wonder Woman Game
The news was first broken by Bloomberg Reporter Jason Schreier , who, earlier this month, also suggested that the development of Monolith Production’s Wonder Woman game was facing challenges, having gone through a reboot in early 2024.
Monolith Production’s Wonder Woman game was originally revealed in late 2021 as a single-player open-world action title.
Previously, the publisher also confirmed that Player First Games’ free-to-play platform fighter Multiversus is shutting down in late May of this year.
The studio closures come amidst a challenging period for the whole video game industry but, more notably, follow in the wake of a financially disappointing 2024 for Warner Bros. Games.
Rocksteady Studios’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League greatly underperformed, leading to layoffs also affecting its developer last year.
“We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises -– Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones,” reads a statement provided by Warner Bros. Games to Kotaku.
“After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.
“The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities.
“This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions.
“As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”
As three studios under Warner Bros. Games’ umbrella close their doors, several others continue to lay off staff and cancel projects, making it seem unlikely that 2025 will finally see things calming down.
