Witchfire was first revealed all the way back in 2017 and since then players have been desperate to dive into the Gothic shooter from Vanishing of Ethan Carter devs, The Astronauts. The game has been subjected to a series of delays and has eluded players for some time, the real kicker is that it might not be as widely available as we’d all assumed.
It’s been revealed that Witchfire will be hosted exclusively on Epic Games Store. It’s sure to come as a blow to those hoping to pick up the game on Steam, luckily though The Astronauts’ partnership with Epic is not in place indefinitely. Here’s everything we know about when Witchfire is coming to Steam.
When Will Epic Game’s Store Exclusivity End?
Witchfire will only be playable during its early access period for at least a year on Epic Games Store, starting with September 20, 2023. It’s a disappointing development for players who have been following the game over its long development cycle but the close working ties between The Astronauts and Epic Games were likely a major factor in the decision.
Before they split off into their own team, The Astronauts formed the ranks of People Can Fly who are best known for their work on Bulletstorm and Outriders. Both of these games along with The Astronauts’ last game, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, made use of Unreal Engine 4 which is developed by Epic Games. Witchfire is also being developed with Unreal Engine, so it’s possible this was a contributing factor when it came to talks of exclusivity.

The Astronauts have also cited Hades as an inspiration for going the Early Access route for Witchfire and are hoping to replicate that game’s journey and success. The team has confirmed that the game will be coming to Steam and other platforms once the early access period ends. Of course, if you can’t wait to dive into the dark fantasy world of Witchfire you can sign up for an Epic Games account -which is totally free – when the game launches this year.
