THQ Nordic’s destructive racer Wreckfest 2 will be entering early access on March 20th on Steam, with its full launch on PC and consoles planned for later in the year. It’s a spiritual successor to the FlatOut series, which was also created by its developer Bugbear, and clearly takes influence from the classic Destruction Derby games.
Wreckfest 2 will feature weekly challenges, time-limited events, and modding support through Steam Workshop when it launches fully. You can share your creations online, and compete in split-screen multiplayer locally or with up to 23 players online.
What’s available in the Early Access launch for Wreckfest 2, and how much does it cost?
The early access build we’ve been playing for the past 24 hours is fairly barebones right now. It contains four tracks: Savolax Sandpit, Speedway, Scrapyard, and Testing Grounds, and you will only have access to four cars: Roadslayer, Rocket, Striker, and Ginger. More content will be added during the early access period.
Multiplayer modes are available, although we haven’t been able to test them due to the lack of players in the preview session. Hopefully, that will change tomorrow when it launches. There are variations for each map, so you can play on Speedway and set it to Derby race, for example.
Visually, it’s an upgrade from the first game, which we loved, but this early access build seems very unstable from a performance point of view. I’ve experienced menus not working, the game crashing during races, and placeholder notifications for assets that fail to load. A patch may land to fix this tomorrow before launch, but this could lead to frustration if you’re excited about playing Wreckfest 2.
Die hard fans will grab it no matter what, but I recommend waiting so you don’t feel disappointed or frustrated by its early teething problems. Hopefully, a few patches and regular content updates will help provide the thrills we expect from this demolition sequel.
Wrestfest 2 is available on Steam and costs $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99. 20% launch discount for the first two weeks (until April 3rd, 2025).
