Xbox users have begun encountering fullscreen ads at startup for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the popular first-person shooter’s campaign early access period begins.
Although MW3 is not the first title to receive pop-up ads at startup on Xbox, some users have been left feeling like they’re unnecessarily intrusive, asking Microsoft to avoid them in the future.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Pop-Up Ads Xbox
As shared on Twitter, now known as X, by user Capt_Logun, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pop-up ads cover the entire screen when booting up your Xbox console. They offer the option of purchasing the title, getting the Vault Edition upgrade, or exiting.
Doing the latter is as simple as leaving any of the console’s menus, and it appears that the advertisement might be a one-time thing.
Although similar promotional means have been used for games like Starfield, some users are particularly unhappy with the way MW3’s have been handled.
“Gotta love spending $400-$500 on a console for the privilege of having Microsoft shove intrusive ads in our faces,” Reddit user MortyestRick wrote. “They keep this up and the Xbox is going to continue selling like absolute s**t.”

The backlash may stem from forcing a fullscreen advertisement as early as startup which, although removed in a matter of seconds, remains annoying.
There’s also the possibility that Xbox users might need more time to get accustomed with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s status as a first-party title.
The fullscreen ads for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 appear after Microsoft has closed its deal to purchase Activision. This, of course, makes the shooter only the latest entry in what is now one of Microsoft’s biggest franchises.
As online arguments about whether or not new releases should be promoted in a similar manner continue, we can probably expect to see more situations like these occurring in the future.
