Bee Movie Game (BMG) is a children’s action title where the protagonist is that of the movie, Barry B. Benson. Without entering how very punny that all is, the premise is to go beyond the movie’s story and really dwell in the world of Benson. While the average adult would get bored with such a title very quickly, there is actually plenty to do for the younger crowd.
BMG is essentially a list of mini games for the future MMORPG fans, though without the MMO part so your kids don’t get addicted to the internet instantly. There is online play, but for a few things like racing little bee cars. That may be a better idea than letting them play PGR4 online with a headset, because at least then you could probably leave them alone. Probably.
Some of the mini games include that driving simulation, flying around as a bee (meaning the possibility of getting squashed is something to be aware of), having “dogfights” using some sort of pollen weapon, and being chased in the middle of busy streets by cars. There’s also the ability to slow down time by using heightened “bee senses” though when such an ability would be used is under wraps.
Possibly the most exciting part of BMG is the classic arcade and puzzle games, which will have plenty of classic games in the new bee format. So anyone interested in getting some old classics without the XBLA prices may want to take a look at this game first.
What makes BMG something that the kids could play for a long time is the sheer amount of different things to do, as listed above. There is literally a good 50 hours of playtime through everything…if it’s a child playing. On top of that, at least for the 360 version, there will obviously be achievements, so anyone squeezing whatever last point they can get can have the whole family help out now.
Bee Movie Game is nothing stunning, but it is graphically close enough to the movie to not look different, at least to children, and the voices we’ve heard so far sound exactly the same. Whether Seinfeld voices Benson in the game is still unknown, but there are plenty who can imitate that voice. Best for kids ten and under, Bee Movie Game comes out on October 30th for the much approved price of $49.99.
