Forgetting about the dinosaurs, regardless of how hard it might be Turok looks and feels very much like Resistance: Fall of Man. Through our first play test at E3, it was hard to see that (especially since it was a very specific portion of the game played) and that we played it at an incomplete state on the Xbox 360. Now, however, there are many similarities, including controls, graphical layout and AI.
Throw dinosaurs into the mix and that all goes to hell. No more taking on just the standard pirates/aliens/monsters we know all too well from every other FPS. These dinosaurs are intelligent beasts looking to do nothing but rip you limb from limb. They have no reservations what side you're on or what guns you hold; but if they spot you, smell you or hear you, there had better be a big distraction. Otherwise, you're dinner.
The dinosaurs are really the greatest dynamic of Turok, and that isn't an understatement. They are both you best friend and worst enemy, depending on how you use them or, more often then not, what the circumstances at hand are. Say, for instance, you have to take out a cache of enemy humans to progress. The friendly AI will recommend doing it quietly, as it always does, but if you wait to survey the situation some Utahraptors come out for a quick snack. Being on a plateau, you're safe for the two to spar it out, but had you jumped straight into the fight, well, now you’re fighting on two fronts. And if karma exists, that's exactly what will happen.
That's why there are so many mechanics implemented so that dinosaurs can be used as tools of destruction against your foes. Flare guns attract attention, and shooting a flare at the ground will open a clear path to bypass a fight. Or you can shoot an enemy pirate in the foot with a flare and let the dino's go after him, a now very scrumptious, bright moving target. Shoot a plant eater, one that normally wouldn't attack something small and pitiful looking like Turok, with an arrow from far and suddenly there's a stampeding 20-ton beast going after anything that moves.
From what we've learned so far, Turok takes place off Earth, so no the dinosaurs haven't wreaked havoc on Terra. But when one looks at the scene at hand, mostly jungles of one form or another, prehistoric earth does come to mind. This makes prime ground for hunting, being hunted, and just about everything in between.
There's also full multiplayer, which seems standard enough, except that all the standard gametypes come with dinosaurs included. Yes, the same tactics for shoving a flare in a pirate's nose apply to that jerk friend you have online, except that he might just do the same to you. As of now, Turok looks nearly complete with very nice graphics on the Unreal Engine, quick and responsive gameplay and, believe it or not, no problems on the PS3. Seems like miracles do happen. And if it weren't enough, T-Rex's are in the game and they will eat you. What more can you ask for?
