Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has commented he doesn’t know ”if we need to put Blu-ray” in Xbox 360 consoles, but adds you’ll ”be able to get Blu-ray drives” as accessory add-ons.
A spokesperson for Microsoft clarified that their ”immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality” media is this fall’s instant-on HD streaming, and Zune Video. Remains quiet on ”future plans”.
”Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories,” said Ballmer, asked by Gizmodo about Xbox 360 and Blu-ray.
An Xbox rep later told them, to clarify Ballmer’s statement: ”Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we’re not ready to comment.”
Blu-ray was declared the victor over Microsoft’s HD-DVD format a long time ago now, but it still haunts the Xbox platform. An accessory external drive seems likely in the future though it’ll also drum up unwanted flashbacks to the HD-DVD external drive. Want Blu-ray on Xbox 360?
