Yves Guillemot of Ubisoft says piracy has taken a heavy toll on them, with PC having ”quite a lot” of illegal games compared to consoles, which ”is low”.
This tool, of which Guillemot didn’t offer details, will ”decrease” desktop piracy and will start next year, ”and probably one game this year.” DS getting better, with PSP looking okay for Ubi.
”Altogether on console, the piracy is low,” Guillemot said, reports Kotaku. ”On the PC the piracy is quite a lot. We are working on a tool that would allow us to decrease that on the PC starting next year and probably one game this year.”
Whether it’s a similar system to SecuROM is unknown but given it’s unpopularity with gamers Ubisoft may have found another approach, one a little less punishing perhaps?
The publisher is also working with Nintendo to help combat DS piracy. ”Nintendo has been able to slow down piracy a lot in Japan,” he continued. ”They are now putting pressure to make sure it decreases in many other countries. We think we will be able to solve this matter.”
Guillemot is also getting interested in the PSP again, thanks to Sony finding ”new ways to control piracy” on the platform. Something the PSPgo is packing?
