The Toronto-based indie studio stated in their blog that they’re ”looking to build upon the classic open-world, Metroid-vania style of games by adding a strong melee combat component, a new dimension switching mechanic, and co-operative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story.” The game also features two player co-op.
The story is an homage to the cheesy El Santo films, in which the gamer plays a down-on-his-luck Mexican named Juan Aguacate, who must save the entire world from a reanimated skeleton named Carlos Calica. When the President’s daughter is kidnapped, Juan must travel through alternate dimensions including “The World of the Dead” and “The World of Nightmares” on his quest to rescue the girl he loves.
Guacamelee has no release date yet, nor is it priced. Check out the announcement trailer below.
