Obsidian have currently got their hands full with Pillars of Eternity, but they’d love to return to the Star Wars universe for Knight of the Old Republic 3.
They’d love it so much, in fact that according to producer Brandon Adler they talk about it ”every three to six months.”
Obsidian were of course responsible for the rough, unfinished but still excellent KOTOR 2, a game which for my money is one of the most interesting things ever to come out of the Star Wars universe. Moral ambiguity? Scottish Sith Lord? Furious wookie assassin? Be still my heart.
”I think there are a lot of the people at the studio that would like to do Knights of the Old Republic 3,” Pillars of Eternity project lead Josh Sawyer told IGN. ”I think at that time LucasArts was really focused on what they considered to be extreme, extreme blockbusters and even though the Knights of the Old Republic series was pretty successful, it just never seemed like something that was going to happen at that time. Having said that, a lot of time has passed. I know there are a lot of people at the studio who are really interested in doing a project like that.”
Not that this means Obsidian will get to play around in that universe again. EA now own the rights to Star Wars franchise video games, so any project would have to go through them. Still, that hasn’t stopped Obsidian from brainstorming ideas.
“It’s something that comes up every three to six months,” Adler explains. ”We bring it up and talk about it. Not anything terribly serious, but we just say ’˜wouldn’t it be cool if?’ and just develop some ideas for what we’d do with that stuff.”
Right now Obsidian are still concentrating on adding the finishing touches to Pillars of Eternity, their Kickstarter-funded fantasy RPG. I got to see it in action recently. It looks nice.
