Indie developer Liber Primus Games is bringing Richard Morgan’s dark fantasy book series A Land Fit For Heroes to apps, tablets and the PC, in the form of a ‘choose your own adventure’ style game-book.
It’s a genre that’s seen something of a revival recently thanks to the increasing ubiquity of tablet devices; for evidence, look to the success of Tin Man Games’ excellent adaptations of old Fighting Fantasy books.
The Land Fit For Heroes book trilogy, which kicked off back in 2008 with the excellent The Steel Remains, takes a more modernist, gritty approach to fantasy. It’s a very different beast to George R.R Martin’s behemoth Ice and Fire series, but there are definitely similarities in the way both authors gleefully deconstruct accepted fantasy conventions.
Plenty of scope for a great narrative-focused adventure, then. A Land Fit For Heroes will tell the story of three unlikely heroes, veteran campaigner Kirellin of House Caith, young warrior Calnar, and thief Ilaria. It’s not quite clear how the game will tie mechanics to story, but expect some kind of light, dice-based combat system.
“I’m extremely excited about this collaboration on A Land Fit For Heroes as a game-book. It’s a fresh format of storytelling for the trilogy and one I’m really looking forward to developing with Liber Primus Games over the coming months,” writes Morgan, who’s no stranger to the world of video game storytelling – he’s previously written for titles like Crysis 2 and Syndicate 2012.
A Land Fit For Heroes is coming to the App Store, Android devices and Steam later this year.
