Team17 has announced that indie developer Unicube’s post-apocalyptic underground colony game Sheltered will be available next week on March 15th, 2016 for PC and console. It will cost £9.99 / $14.99 /€12,99.
The player finds themselves in the role of a family taking over an abandoned shelter, and using it to survive the after-effects of a global apocalypse populated by raiders and mutated beasts. The main focus, however, is making sure the shelter doesn’t self-destruct. Combat claustrophobia, radiation and mental exhaustion are some of the many concerns the player has to watch out for in addition to maintaining the shelter’s infrastructure and scavenging for goods on the surface.
Part of the game is recruiting outsiders, which of whom have their own personality, and some of them are ticking time bombs. They may turn out to be serial killers or arsonists, and how they’re dealt with can be the difference between life and death. Decisions have a major impact, too. ”As your family develop, their stats will adapt with an evolving experience and trauma system. Attributes, strengths and weaknesses will dynamically change based on your choices.”
The other strength of the game is the fact it’s procedurally generated. ”Your family will encounter various threats including roaming factions and feral beasts.” Violence can be employed against outside factions who cannot be reasoned with.
