Free-roaming crowd-funded survival horror Darkwood has been in Early Access since 2014 and now, finally, developer Acid Wizard Studio are preparing to launch the game properly. The release date has been set for August 17, and to celebrate they have released a new live action trailer. You can see the trailer above. It’s very creepy and atmospheric, but be warned - it contains nudity! Oh, you’ve already watched it? Oh well.
Darkwood is described as a “top-down, oldschool, sandbox survival horror set in a procedurally generated, open world. It features RPG and roguelike elements, with intense combat and a eerie atmosphere.” The developer compares it to Project Zomboid, Don’t Starve and Teleglitch. By day you explore randomly-generated woods scavenging for materials and uncovering secrets, and by night Minecraft-like you have to hunker down and defend yourself. The game’s Steam store page can be found here with more information.
Darkwood was funded on Indiegogo in 2013, raising over $57,000. A modest sum perhaps even for an indie game, but continual player interest has allowed developer Acid Wizard Studio (self-described as “three guys and a dog”) to continue working on the game right up to now, its final release four years later.
