Marvel Rivals has officially been unveiled, introducing an Overwatch-style PvP shooter that’s brimming with heroes right from the first gameplay trailer. But who exactly makes up the Marvel Rivals roster?
The trailer provides a glimpse of gameplay featuring several heroes and hints at the presence of about half a dozen more.
We’ve compiled all of them below.
Full list of Characters for Marvel Rivals
From familiar faces to heroes you probably haven’t heard of, this article has a full list and breakdown of what we know about each character so far, as well as some gameplay and images.
Hela
Hela Odinsdottir, the Asgardian Goddess of Death and former Executioner of Asgard, was imprisoned in Hel for millennia by her father, Odin. Upon Odin’s death, Hela was released from her prison and quickly sought to reclaim her power over Asgard. When the people of Asgard refused to submit to her rule, Hela responded by decimating Odin’s armies and enslaving their people.
In her quest for dominance, she engaged in a series of confrontations with her younger brothers, Thor and Loki. Cate Blanchett portrayed the character in the movie Thor: Ragnarok. Little is known about her playstyle for now, but she will be playable in the Closed Alpha Test on the 10th of May.
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is a predictable initial character reveal. Since his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has become one of the most well-known heroes. His abilities to manipulate time present some great gameplay opportunities.
The gameplay trailer showcases his use of portals for team teleportation across the map. He also employs the Eye of Agamotto to freeze enemies and knock them into their Astral Forms. Doctor Strange appears to excel as a disruptor, aiming to incapacitate enemies rather than inflict direct damage.
Iron Man
Iron Man is all about dealing direct damage. Equipped with his blasters and a laser, he can obliterate parts of the map, creating new pathways and controlling lanes from above.
His ability to fly and hover across the map allows him to surprise enemy teams, followed by unleashing a massive rocket barrage or deploying his laser. Iron Man is poised to become an immensely popular hero upon release.
Hulk
Hulk lives up to expectations as a formidable tank and damage dealer. By leaping forward and body slamming into the heart of the battle, he lands amidst foes, dealing damage and using swipes to take down enemies at close range.
He possesses the ability to seize enemies for powerful finishing moves and effectively pushes the objective while sustaining attacks, enabling his teammates to target adversaries from a distance.
Spider-Man
Spider-Man appears to take the role of a cunning trapper. His webs can stun enemies, rendering them unable to fire weapons or use any gadgets or abilities.
His agility is unmatched, with the capability to perform flips and jumps with ease. While swinging has not been showcased, it would be unexpected if he lacked the ability to at least propel himself towards platforms or enemies, delivering a powerful kick upon impact.
Rocket Raccoon
Rocket Raccoon is armed with a standard weapon and offers considerable versatility in play style, thanks to his booster backpack. This gear enables him to scale walls, hover on the ground, and even perch on Groot’s back to perform a boost attack.
Considering the variety of tools at his disposal, Rocket Raccoon is likely to be an excellent choice for many players just starting out.
Groot
Groot can use his extensive reach and formidable strength to thrust enemies against walls, inflict damage from a distance, and sustain a significant amount of damage himself.
Although his presence in gameplay has been limited to a brief glimpse, it’s confirmed that his voice lines will faithfully include his iconic phrase: “I am Groot.”
Namor
Namor wields spears to harm enemies from afar. You can see him summon a small octopus minion that targets enemies with its attacks, suggesting his role as a defensive character with traps and the octopus acting as a defensive turret.
We think that he will possess water-based abilities, capable of ensnaring enemies or repelling them from objectives.
Loki
Loki stands out as one of the most fascinating characters introduced so far. He possesses the ability to create a clone of himself and teleport to its location. Yet, his capabilities extend beyond that; he can morph into other heroes. Even though he banished his elder brother and seized Yggsgard’s throne, the power-hungry King now sets his sights on every timeline!
The gameplay trailer features him transforming into Black Panther, raising questions about the extent of his transformation ability. It remains unclear whether his shapeshifting is limited to a predefined set of heroes before a match, any member of his team, or even enemies.
Black Panther
Black Panther appears as a character with a strong emphasis on melee combat, reminiscent of Genji from Overwatch 2. He can dash, attack enemies with swipes, and even transform into a large ethereal panther, as shown in the gameplay trailer.
He is likely to be one of the more enjoyable characters to use, particularly for players adept at quickly accumulating kills by targeting multiple enemies with his swift attacks.
Magik
Magik reappears in the Marvel gaming universe, following her inclusion in Marvel’s Midnight Suns in 2022. True to her character, she wields her sword to inflict damage from afar and in close combat.
She can harness her portals for teleportation and can invoke Inferno to transform into her demon form, boosting her offensive capabilities.
Peni Parker
Peni Parker is quite an odd choice in the roster. She operates a massive mech passed down to her by her father, using it for both mobility and to inflict damage.
Introduced to the Marvel universe in 2014, Peni is among the newer characters, which will hopefully bring a fresh dynamic to the game.
Storm
Storm was showcased prominently after the Marvel Rivals trailer, though without any gameplay footage, leaving her abilities a matter of speculation. It’s plausible she will harness elemental forces, potentially employing storms to impair visibility.
She might also be capable of projecting rain from her hands, using it as a means to inflict damage on foes from afar.
Scarlet Witch
Much like Storm, Scarlet Witch is expected to wield an array of spells for controlling the battlefield, including pushing adversaries back, inflicting damage, and potentially drawing them out from cover.
Mantis
Mantis presents an intriguing selection for the roster, leaving little room for speculation about her role. She could adopt a summon-based approach or serve as an intelligence gatherer, using her abilities to see enemies through walls.
Star-Lord
Star-Lord completes the lineup of Guardians in the roster. His dual pistols are expected to function similarly to SMGs, providing rapid-fire rates. It’s reasonable to speculate that he may use rocket-propelled boosts for swift movements and avoid attacks.
The Punisher
The Punisher is expected to fill the “soldier-type” hero role familiar to players of games like Overwatch 2, akin to Soldier 76. It’s plausible he’ll be equipped with explosive weaponry, potentially including a rocket launcher, and likely grenades to disrupt enemy lanes and force opponents to retreat.
Magneto
Magneto is the last X-Men member to be confirmed, although, like some characters highlighted at the trailer’s end, no gameplay footage of him has been revealed yet.
Speculatively, his abilities might include manipulating magnetic forces to push and pull enemies, as well as potentially dismantling equipment scattered across the map with his magnetic powers.
Luna Snow
Luna Snow might be a new name to many. Initially introduced in Marvel Future Fight, a mobile game, she eventually crossed over into the comics, wielding cryokinetic powers.
The trailer showcases her launching icicles and gliding across the map, suggesting she will be a fast character. This speed and agility draws a comparison to Tracer from Overwatch 2.
And that’s the lineup of characters confirmed so far for Marvel Rivals. The initial announcement has introduced a robust roster featuring a mix of Avengers, X-Men, and several unexpected characters you probably didn’t expect when the game leaked.
Thankfully, you will get to try out 12 of them in a closed alpha in May on PC. If you are looking for even more on the game, be sure to read our story on the announcement, which shows additional concept art and more.
