Whether you want to challenge yourself or give the nature surrounding your cities a certain vibe, knowing how to change the terrain in Cities: Skylines 2 is something you’ll sooner or later want to add to your designer arsenal.
Changing terrain in Cities: Skylines 2 can turn flat land you don’t plan to use for building into a picturesque landscape. Or, perhaps you’re looking to design the world’s most functional hellscape, which is as valid a goal to have. Regardless of why you want to do it, read on below for the options available at launch.
Cities: Skylines 2 Change Terrain
From what we can tell, the main way to change terrain in Cities: Skylines 2 is by using the landscape tool. To clarify, this won’t let you swap terrain types in and out, but rather change the height and shape of terrain.
The landscape tool comes with four functionalities. The first of them, the Shift Terrain Tool, allows you to elevate or lower terrain, creating tall peaks and deep pits. The Level Terrain Tool then allows you to level terrain at a certain height.
If you’re looking to remove rough edges or even out elevation, the Soften Terrain Tool is your friend. Lastly, the Slope Terrain Tool lets you create slopes by evening out the ground between terraformed areas and your target height.
The brush size and strength settings allow you to customize how strong the effects you have on the landscape are. As simple as it sounds, it can take a bit of time to get used to the landscape tool and how it can change terrain in Cities: Skylines II.
If, instead, you’re looking for a different starting terrain configuration, you can switch to a new location by starting a new city on a different map.
That is what we know about how you can change the terrain in Cities: Skylines 2. For more on the city builder, here is how to unlock the San Francisco set alongside when it launches on PS5.
