After being delayed indefinitely earlier in July, Cities: Skylines 2’s troubled console version continues to face development hurdles.
In a recent update, developer Colossal Order revealed that it is currently wrestling with “both simulation issues (CPU) and graphics issues (GPU) which become noticeable when players take certain actions that cause frame rate drops or memory overload,” while admitting that it is not ready to commit to a release date just yet.

The issues are described as “particularly challenging due to the hardware limitations of consoles.
“For instance, when placing larger buildings that involve numerous entities, the system struggles to handle the data load,” the developer explains in a recent Steam post. “During the calculation process (e.g., checking if there’s enough space or if any entities overlap with existing assets), performance bottlenecks arise, resulting in these noticeable issues.”
The team working on Cities: Skylines II’s console version has brough the game to a “stable and playable state” but only by reducing graphical fidelity “to the level where it becomes a compromise that we are not willing to make.”
Even after that gets sorted, even more optimizations will be required before players can get their hands on this version of the game.
Although Colossal Order isn’t ready to share a release date for Cities: Skylines II’s console version, it assured fans that bringing its beleaguered sequel to consoles “remains a top priority.”
This comes at a time when game release quality is a hot topic both for fans of Paradox Interactive’s titles and the company itself, following a string of misses and DLC that failed to launch to widespread acclaim.
