Cities: Skylines 2, the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2015 city-building simulator developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive, has been announced and now we’re all wondering about its upcoming release date.
The original game successfully contested the supremacy of Maxis’ SimCity series, capitalizing on the difficult launch of the latest SimCity installment.
Since then, SimCity has shrunk away from prominence, while Cities: Skylines has enjoyed a successful 8-year run. During this period, the game has been expanded with multiple DLCs, received a remaster, and even launched a VR version.
With the final pieces of DLC mapped out for the original, it’s almost time for a long-awaited sequel. So with that in mind, let’s look at Cities: Skylines 2’s release date, what it will bring, and crucially, when we’ll be able to get our hands on it.
When is Cities: Skylines 2 coming out?
Cities: Skylines 2 initially had a tentative release date of late 2023 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It was also set ti arrive on Xbox Game Pass on the day of launch.
- Cities: Skylines 2 PC release date: October 24, 2023
- Cities: Skylines 2 console release date: Spring 2024
On March 6, 2023, Paradox Interactive announced Cities: Skylines 2 in its Paradox Announcement Show. The sequel will once again be helmed by the developer of the first game; Colossal Order.
During June’s Xbox Games Showcase, publisher Paradox Interactive confirmed that the title was set to launch on October 24, 2023 on all platforms.
That changed in late September, when the publisher revealed that the title’s console version had been delayed until spring 2024.
The reasoning behind the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions arriving later came down to allowing developer Colossal order “to focus on matching the quality and performance across all platforms.”
Cities: Skylines 2 is described as a ”next-generation city builder” by its publisher, and is reported to feature ”the most realistic city simulation ever created.” As before, you’ll be able to grow from a humble community to a gargantuan cityscape over time. There’s set to be a focus on more granular details this time. That includes catering to individual households and being able to modify a greater number of aspects of your city.
