CD Projekt Red wants the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel to feature “the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date.”
Alongside setting such a high bar for the quality of the NPC crowds, the developer has suggested yet again that it is considering adding multiplayer to Project Orion – the codename used for the sequel.
Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Crowds
Both snippets of information come from new job listings posted to the studio’s website, as spotted by VGC.
The latter mentions “solid and flexible gameplay systems that work in both single-player and multiplayer,” signaling that we might get to explore the sequel’s world alongside other players in some capacity.
The feature was originally meant to be included in the series’ first entry, but ended up being scrapped as the team shifted focus to fixing the plethora of issues present at release.
Although the road from a line in a job listing to the final product is long and arduous, some will inevitably draw hope that the developer has learned its lesson following the notoriously troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077.
While we do know that Project Orion is in development at CD Projekt Red’s Boston studio, few specific details about how it plays have been shared until now.
This isn’t necessarily surprising, as The Witcher 4 will likely release first. Marketing efforts for the fantasy sequel are steadily spinning up, with an impressive cinematic trailer debuting during 2024’s The Game Awards.
It will be interesting to see how the developer’s shift from using its proprietary Red Engine to relying on Unreal Engine 5 will impact the quality and features of its upcoming RPGs. Perhaps the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel’s crowds will, indeed, manage to wow us all.
