As much as Enshrouded centers on the Flameborn’s quest to reclaim Embervale, the world map is, in many respects, a highlight, offering challenges that spur our character’s growth and rewarding our perseverance. But does it feature a procedurally generated landscape, common in numerous other survival games, or has developer Keen Games opted for a handcrafted method in crafting its world?
This is one question that has come up regularly in online discussions ever since the game was revealed. Thankfully, the studio has clarified that it chose the latter option instead of following in the footsteps of its peers.
Enshrouded World Map Size
“When we are creating the world, we use procedural tools to create the map,” an FAQ article on the game’s website explains, “but then we use the old-fashioned way, by hand, by using free range game designer to create an immersive hand-crafted experience, just to make it as exciting and beautiful as it can be.”
The wording above is a bit unclear, but further insight was provided in a video from December 2023 that focuses specifically on how Embervale was created.
“When creating a game world, developers must choose between procedurally generated content which is created by an algorithm or handcrafted content. For our game, we’ve handcrafted the locations, terrain, and world, using algorithms only as a supplemental tool to support the creative process.”
This approach, the developer notes, enables it to create “unique and interesting assets for more meaningful discovery.”
The screenshots above, which are taken from two different world instances, into which we logged using two different characters, show how the topography remains unchanged.
Although this makes it easier to familiarize yourself sooner with the world, Enshrouded’s world map is huge, and uncovering all of its secrets will take a fair bit of time.
It remains to be seen if during Enshrouded’s stay in early access, its world map will receive more procedurally generated elements or not. At launch, its handcrafted nature helps set it apart from its peers.
