Gotham Knights’ is looking to close the 6-year gap since Batman: Arkham Knight launched, when its release date comes by, promising another dose of open-world action-RPG goodness that will see us roaming across the often troubled city and beating up lots of bad guys.
Developed by Warner Bros. Games Montréal, studio responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins, the two games do seem to share some DNA, but Gotham Knights seeks to carve its own path, focusing on multiple heroes and villains that Batman has yet to contend with, at least in video game form. Here is everything we know about Gotham Knights, including details about its release date, gameplay, story, and more.
Gotham Knights Release Date
Gotham Knights release date is currently slated for the 25th October 2022, pinning it for a release near the end of the year, just in time for Halloween.
This announcement was made on the 9th March via the official Twitter account, although it had been delayed from its initial 2021 release window late that year.
Gotham Knights Story
Gotham Knights’ story starts off quite boldly, with Batman killed in an explosion that rocks Wayne Manor. Jim Gordon is out of the picture, too, which is why Bruce Wayne tasks the Batman Family with defending the city from the criminals that are soon to run rampant.
The four members of the family will have to prove themselves as they deal with both lowly criminals and supervillains like Doctor Freeze who, as always, are up to no good. Hinted at when the game was originally revealed, Gotham Knights’ story will also see its heroes going up against the Court of Owls, a secret society of the city’s oldest and richest families that have been pulling the strings from the shadows since its founding.
Gotham Knights Main Characters
The Batman Family is comprised of four characters, which step in to fill Batman’s boots, bringing their own skills and abilities to the fold.
Red Hood
Red Hood, or Jason Todd, is described as “an intense and volatile anti-hero,” which you would probably assume right away, based on his grim appearance and preference for dual-wielding pistols.
Brought back to life by one of Batman’s foes, his training allowed him to “reach the peak of human strength” while his knowledge of multiple combat techniques and ability to wield both traditional and high-tech weapons make him a fierce combatant.
According to the official Gotham Knights website, he also “embraced Batman’s non-lethal combat methods,” so perhaps his weapons are loaded with some sort of special ammunition.
Robin
Robin, or Tim Drake, is the youngest of the group but stands out thanks to his intelligence and mastery of deductive reasoning. Looking up to Batman, who was his mentor, he is handy with his collapsible quarterstaff, but can also resort to stealth when the situation demands it.
On top of that, his background in “combined psychological warfare and behavioral sciences” grants him an advantage over his foes.
Batgirl
Barbara Gordon’s willpower and determination help her see any mission through. Having left behind her past as Oracle, she returns to the streets of Gotham, taking over Batman’s duties. Proficient in multiple fighting styles, including kickboxing, capoeira, and jiu-jitsu, her signature weapon is the tonfa.
Although she kicks ass in close-quarters combat, her past as Oracle also makes her great at “hacking or coding in computers and technological systems to dig for information.”
Nightwing
Dick Grayson is described as “a natural leader, an optimist, and the most charismatic of the Batman Family.” Growing up as part of a circus family, lends to his mastery of acrobatics. In battle, he wields dual escrima sticks that bring the pain to his enemies.
Gotham Knights Gameplay
We got our first look at Gotham Knights gameplay via a gameplay trailer from August 2021, which you can watch below, showcasing one of the game’s Villain Crimes. In it, Batgirl traverses Gotham using her bike, racing to stop Doctor Freeze’s plan to manipulate the weather and flash freeze the city.
Early on, it’s established that the entirety of Gotham Knights can be played alone or in co-op alongside another player. Shortly after, Robin enters the fray. The video features both close-quarters combat reminiscent of Rocksteady’s Arkham series, at least looking from afar, as well as exploration portions, during which Batgirl uses her grappling hook to scale one of Gotham’s tall buildings.
Players will get to choose how they approach encounters, according to the developers, stealth continuing to be a viable option. As players level up, enemies also keep up to them. Boss fights against villains like Doctor Freeze “can be a very different proposition at level 5 or at level 15,” reflected in their stats, attacks, and defenses.
Gotham Knights System Requirements
As there’s still a bit to go until release, we don’t know yet what Gotham Knights system requirements will look like. We expect to learn more heading into 2022.
Where can you buy Gotham Knights and how much does it cost?
Gotham Knights will be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. Its Steam page is already up and you’ll also find it on the PlayStation and Microsoft stores. There’s no word on the price tag, but we expect it to cost somewhere between $40 and $70 or your regional equivalent.
