Publisher Slitherine and developer Starni Games have unveiled turn-based wargame Headquarters World War II during today’s Home of Wargamers 2021 Live+ Winter Edition event.
As its title suggests, the game takes players back through time, exploring the Battle of Normandy from both sides across its three campaigns, each boasting nine missions that follow the UK, US, and German forces in the aftermath of the D-Day landings.
Built using Unreal Engine 4, Headquarters World War II aims for a realistic visual style to complement its easy to learn but hard to master gameplay.
As you storm bunkers, occupy houses, and ambush enemy armor, you’ll have to be aware of multiple strategic and tactical aspects. Vehicle positioning can make the difference between a functional tank and a husk that can only be used as cover.
Losing a driver translates to a loss of mobility, while a dead gunner will see vehicles firing less often. Infantry can use fences, walls, and various obstacles as cover, while different terrain types affect not just line of sight but also combat effectiveness.
Between battles, you can upgrade troops and assign heroes to your units. Headquarters World War II also features a skirmish mode whose six maps let up to 4 players test their skills against each other. If PvP isn’t your thing, you can also fill those slots with AI-controlled armies.
In addition, an editor tool will allow players to create their own maps and share them with the game’s community. Headquarters World War II is currently slated to launch in 2022 on both PC and console.
