The Inquisitor is an upcoming action-adventure game set in an alternate 1500s, portraying Christianity in a more punitive light. The unique premise of players embodying a relentless inquisitor with the autonomy to choose their methods of punishing dissenters is partly why the game’s release date has generated significant buzz since its unveiling.
The Inquisitor is inspired by Jacek Piekara’s book series, ‘The Inquisitor’. The game traces the journey of Mordimer Madderdin, an inquisitor dispatched to the sin-riddled town of Konigstein. Tasked with meting out justice to those who defy the faith, he also confronts a malevolent force from another dimension. It’s in development for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
The Inquisitor Release Date
Publisher Kalypso Media and developer The Dust have been working on The Inquisitor since 2019, and have announced today that it’s set to release for the PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 on the 9th February, 2024.
At Gamescom 2023, Kalypso Media presented the game for the first time and unveiled a gameplay trailer to highlight its development and generate anticipation ahead of the imminent launch. While a specific release date wasn’t provided at the time, they did tease it as “coming soon”.
Kalypso Media has yet to confirm if the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass. However, given that other Kalypso titles have made their way to the service and with Dungeons 4 slated for release on the platform, there’s potential. There’s no indication that it will be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
A new behind-the-scenes video offers a glimpse inside the recording studio with voice actor Jamie Maclachlan, who lends his vocal talents to the protagonist Mordimer Madderdin for the game.

Story and Gameplay
In late May 2022, the game’s initial gameplay trailer was unveiled, providing a deeper insight into its universe and the activities awaiting players as they assume the role of Mordimer. The game’s somber, intense ambiance complements the morally ambiguous decisions players will face while engaging with the residents of Konigstein.
The Inquisitor is set in an alternative 1500 A.D. where Jesus evaded crucifixion and chose a path of retribution against non-believers. Fast forward to a grim and tumultuous world, legions of devout Inquisitors relentlessly uphold their “Holy Law.” Engage in puzzle-solving, pursue vampires, and mete out justice in the name of this sacred edict.
Players will identify and question suspects, assemble evidence, and leverage the protagonist’s capability to access the Unworld, uncovering the concealed truths of their targets. Yet, this dimension harbors a sinister force intent on annihilating intruders. It’s not just about detective work and inquiries. Players can also choose to wield their trusty sword, using brute force to further their investigations.
