They say that in space, no one can hear you scream. But in Rocket, the latest arcade shooter from publisher and developer ZeNfA Productions, that’s simply because of the destruction you leave in your wake as you move from level to level.
A modern arcade shooter that was recently released in Steam Early Access, Rocket is visibly inspired by Atari classic Asteroids, evolving its timeless concept in a few key ways.
For starters, it’s not just sizeable pieces of space rocks you have to dodge and swiftly destroy using the weapons equipped on your ship.
As you navigate across its open levels, you also encounter enemy ships that are all too eager to stop you in your tracks. Adding to the danger are anomalies like supernovas and black holes that are ready to suck your ship in.
Surviving in space can be challenging but you’re constantly rewarded for taking down opponents with resources that allow you to unlock stronger weapons and useful upgrades that make your ship more powerful.
Rocket’s colorful visuals make it approachable, while its combat soundscape opts for simplicity, harkening back to the game that inspired it.
You won’t have to brave the perils of space alone, either. Whether locally or online, up to five players can play together, cooperating or competing for high scores which can be pridefully showcased on the game’s leaderboards.
All of the above is just the beginning, as Rocket aims to stay in early access for one whole year. During this time, updates, the first of which is scheduled to drop this March, will see it growing.
Regardless if you’re looking for a quick dose of nostalgia or want to take a break from live service games that can often feel burdening, you’ll find Rocket available for $4,99/4,99€/£4.29 on Steam. There’s even a demo that lets you sample its retro-inspired gameplay for free.
