UPDATE OCTOBER 1: Amazon Games narrows down New World server transfer release window to week of October 4.
Publisher and developer Amazon Games has announced that New World players will get a free server transfer in the coming two weeks, as part of its efforts to reduce the long queue times.
The MMORPG’s launch saw it becoming the second most played game on Steam, but while hundreds of thousands of players were ready to explore Aeternum, plenty ended up stuck in queues with wait times varying from tens of minutes to several hours. New World’s free server transfer will give players an opportunity to move their characters to less populated servers, easing the load on the more popular ones and reducing the time it takes to get into the game.
“Our sole focus right now is to get everyone logging in and playing quickly,” reads a statement from the developer. “To ensure everyone can find an open world now, while also finding a home in Aeternum with their community long-term, we’ll offer an opportunity in the next two weeks for all players to relocate their characters to a new server of their choice at no cost.”
No exact date was given for when New World’s free server transfers might go live and the developer isn’t relying solely on them to fix the long queue times. In the meantime, it is “continuing to stand up additional servers and will expand the capacity of our existing servers once we have properly tested these changes.”
More worlds have already been deployed across several regions, which resulted in downtime but if it all means that more people get to play the game instead of waiting in queue, it’s all for the better.
On October 1, Amazon Games narrowed down the release window of New World’s server transfers to the week of October 4, provided it’s deemed ready after thorough testing. Details on how exactly the feature works will be shared prior to release.
On October 9, the developer announced that the feature is expected to go live during the week of October 11.
“During our testing we uncovered some edge cases where the transfer experience does not meet our standards for its release. This means that we will be taking some extra time to get these issues resolved before we feel comfortable giving everyone their free server transfer token,” reads a forum post.
As the week came to an end, Amazon Games announced its decision to hold the feature’s release until the week of October 18.
“We have the final pieces of the server transfer system tested and ready to go, but we are making a difficult decision to hold it until next week,” an update reads. “This was a balance call between honoring a date we told you to expect, versus the disruption of a deployment during a peak play period (the weekend).”
If you plan on taking advantage of New World’s free server transfers, it might be a good idea to plan ahead which server you’ll call home, especially if you’re tackling Aeternum’s dangers alongside a party of friends.
