Publisher Paradox Interactive has clarified its stance on its DLC pricing policy going forward after Crusader Kings 3: Royal Court’s $30 price tag drew a fair share of complaints from fans.
Royal Court was the first Paradox DLC to launch with the higher asking price and, while this won’t always be the case for future releases, CEO Fredrik Wester clarified that the company “will continue to be flexible in our pricing policy” going forward.
The publisher will evaluate the price of future DLC depending on a number of factors, including the nature of the release, the amount of required development resources, and “the value that we perceive in the product.”
“In general, you can say, from our perspective, that our DLCs have been priced lower than many of our peers have, so we might adjust our prices upwards,” Wester said during a livestreamed Q&A session.
“Not all of our DLC is going to be [priced] at $30 in the future, no, but you might expect an upwards trend in pricing.”
Previously, major pieces of DLC would cost $20. The negative comments aimed at Crusader Kings III: Royal Court mention how the amount of content on offer doesn’t justify the price hike.
The fact that DLC usually launches alongside updates whose free features often complement the new premium ones also affects how it’s perceived by a portion of fans.
In other Paradox Interactive news, the publisher today shared its financial report covering the entirety of 2021, during which it revealed that it would shift focus towards its “core business” and rethink how its approach to publishing games developed by external partners.
