Paradox Interactive has been teasing the next major expansion pack for Stellaris on its social media accounts over the last few days, but we can now reveal the first details about the The Machine Age Expansion, which will introduce new ethical and social dilemmas for Stellaris players.
Stellaris: The Machine Age will be released for the PC at some point in 2024, and is being developed by Paradox Development Studio.
Stellaris: The Machine Age - What's it all about?
Scientists have unlocked the secrets to formulate organic matter with that of machines, enabling human life to overcome the biological limitations of minds and flesh. This advancement marks the beginning of The Machine Age.
It’s a time of technical glory, but at the same time, it raises questions about the ethical and social dilemmas of using powerful technology to form genetically enhanced humans.
If you’ve watched Star Trek you may know all about the Eugenics Wars set between 1992 and 1996 in Earth’s history, and this DLC appears quite similar to this fictional arc, with some of the teaser images and artwork looking very much like the Borg.
The Expansion will add a new Endgame Crisis for players to confront: a formidable synthetic threat. Players will also have the option to become this threat themselves through a new Crisis Path.
“Your machine empires are no longer limited to gestalt consciousness and can have individual personalities and more diverse stories and origins.” said Paradox.
You can customize your empire with 3 new Machine Ascension Paths.
Here are some details on the three new origins:
- Cybernetic Creed: Your empire pursues a divine calling: the holy fusion of the body and cybernetics. Augmentation is worship.
- Synthetic Fertility: Once a thriving society, a novel genetic disease leaves your empire unable to reproduce biologically. Digital salvation seems the only option to avoid extinction.
- Arc Welders: Hailing from a world starved for space, a robotic society turns to the stars for resources.
The Machine Age will also include new reactive portraits, 6 new Civics, 2 new mid-game structures (the molten Arc Furnace and powerful Dyson Swarm), new Population Traits, and 7 brand-new music tracks to get you assimilated among the machines.
There’s no confirmed release date yet, but it should be released at some point in 2024. You can find Stellaris on Steam.
