Overkill’s The Walking Dead is an online co-op game set in The Walking Dead universe, developed by Payday dev Overkill Software. The game has been delayed to late 2017, according to publisher Starbreeze.
The timing of the revelation comes at an interesting moment, as Starbreeze has announced that major Korean publisher SmileBit invested $40M in the company. Not only will this mean SmileBit will be publishing Overkill’s The Walking Dead in Asian markets, but Starbreeze has been tasked with bringing online shooter Crossfire to Western markets.
According to Starbreeze’s press release, the game based on Crossfire will be a completely new spinoff. This, combined with the announcement that Overkill’s The Walking Dead, explains why the latter title will be delayed a year.
Not much is known about the licensed zombie game. The most information was revealed by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who said at the SXSW 2015 panel for the game that it would be ”Payday-esque.” That would seem to indicate it will resemble that other zombie co-op game, Left 4 Dead, in which players are plopped in various scenarios, trying to accomplish goals while being beset by the AI zombies. However, in The Walking Dead, humans often represent a greater threat than zombies, so it could be that it isn’t only zombies that attack.
