There's a new retro-styled FPS on the way, and it's the spiritual successor to the classic Heretic & Hexen series by Raven Software. AMID EVIL is being made by Indefatigable, formed from many of the team behind the modern Rise of the Triad remake, and New Blood Interactive who produced the upcoming excellent retro FPS Dusk.
Our review of Rise of the Triad!
AMID EVIL is a fantasy medieval FPS with a focus on melee and magic weapons, much like the Heretic/Hexen series. You can watch the trailer here or embedded below. It certainly looks a lot of fun, and has a neat mix of great Unreal Engine 4-quality graphics (which is the engine it uses) and 90s-style low-res polygon characters that look similar to STRAFE. Here's the rather fun feature list:
AMID EVIL isn't out until 2018 at the earliest, but there will be a playable demo of it available at PAX Australia in Melbourne, Oct 27 – 29, so if you're attending that it might be worth checking out. Let us know if you do!
While it does look like fun and we'll always keep an eye on a retro-style FPS made by people who love the genre, especially a remake of Heretic, remember that the Rise of the Triad remake wasn't that good and their following game Bombshell was even worse. Still, as long as AMID EVIL is just a fun FPS we'll be satisfied.
