The first Command & Conquer in eight years has been announced by EA, and is called Command & Conquer: Rivals. It'll be an RTS, set in the classic GDI vs Nod era, but it's only on mobile. Damn.
EA revealed the new Command & Conquer at their EA Play E3 2018 conference, which they proceeded to show an entire match of to an audience waiting for Anthem, so managed to upset two completely separate audiences at once.
Update: Apparently we were 100% correct about this game existing, as veteran RTS designer Greg Black is indeed working on it. We hate being right sometimes.
It follows on the heels of the new Red Alert game we announced back in April... which was also a free-to-play mobile game, made by Tencent. It's like EA hates us, or something. We're going to be honest though - at least the Tencent game looked like Command & Conquer. This 1v1 strategy game... doesn't. The maps are small and grid-based, and battles are about getting control points rather than crushing your enemy.
The last Command & Conquer game was C&C4, aptly subtitled Tiberium Twilight, in 2010, and was so awful it killed the franchise. The promising-looking Command & Conquer: Generals 2 was repurposed into an online free-to-play game, which was so awful it killed the franchise. Command & Conquer: Rivals could be awesome for all we know, but to be honest... it might have killed the franchise, if EA hadn't done that twice in the last decade.
So, what do you guys think?
