PlatinumGames cofounder Hideki Kamiya has announced his departure from the company. October 12, 2023 will be his last day as he moves on to new projects.
Known for directing Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya’s departure from PlatinumGames comes as a surprise.
“As announced on the official PlatinumGames X account, I will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023. This came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs. and was by no means an easy decision to make,” Kamiya wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“However, I feel this outcome is for the best. I will continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way. I hope you’ll keep your eyes peeled.”
The official PlatinumGames X account also confirmed his departure, noting that the company is “truly grateful for his creative ideas, leadership, and contribution to the growth of PlatinumGames from our start-up to this very day.”
Kamiya didn’t share concrete details about his future plans. The wording used in the statement announcing his departure from the company he co-founded does, however, suggest that he will continue creating video games.
According to VGC’s Andy Robinson, it’s possible to see him joining a Chinese company, following in the footsteps of other Japanese game developers who have taken that route in recent times.
Prior to his departure, Kamiya was the director of Project G.G., a title announced all the way back in 2020. It’s unclear where that leaves the project, but chances are we’ll hear more about it soon.
