Sea of Thieves has seen more than 15 million players sail its seas since its launch back in March 2018, developer Rare announced today.
Over 5 million new players tried out Sea of Thieves since January 2020 – when the game reached its 10 million players milestone –, more people having played the pirate game in the first six months of 2020 than in 2019’s entirety.
Rare has also acknowledged that a major reason behind Sea of Thieves’ growth was its Steam release earlier in June, which was also the game’s biggest month in terms of active players, surpassing the 3.3 million mark.
Sea of Thieves 15 Million Players
“A contributing factor to this growth has been our recent launch on Steam. We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve seen from the Steam community, with over 1M copies of the game having been sold so far and the game regularly appearing in the top selling and most played games charts.”, reads the annoucnement post.
Sea of Thieves’ growth wouldn’t have been possible without the constant support developer Rare has given the game.
Following a barebones launch, it stuck to its guns, fleshing out the pirate game in subsequent updates that added new gameplay elements, limited-time events, and much-needed fixes.
The post concluded by saying that “there’s plenty more to come” for Sea of Thieves which now joins the group of redeemed live service games alongside the likes of Rainbow Six Siege and For Honor.
