The Outer Worlds will not be coming to Steam on release after all, with the game first making rounds at Epic Games Store, as is the latest fad. Instead, we'll be getting The Outer Worlds on Steam in 2020, but work on it was being done just yesterday, too.
The Outer Worlds Steam listing was being edited by Obsidian developers just yesterday, before the Epic exclusivity announcement, and this apparently happened before the game received a new release date, too.
What this means in practice is that, in all likelihood, at least a certain portion of Obsidian developers likely did not know that Take-Two was gearing up to release their game as an Epic Store exclusive.
At the time of writing, the latest update to The Outer Worlds' Steam page was to edit its release date to reflect its one-year exclusivity deal, but according to Lewie Procter of RPS fame, there were edits being done just before the announcement, and before the date change, too.
What came after was a wave of disbelief and discord, with users of both major gaming subreddits (r/gaming and r/games) mostly arguing against the decision to release The Outer Worlds as an exclusive. The developments might also be stoking the fires of piracy yet once more, but it remains to be seen what sale numbers are like in practice.
