Publisher Sega and developer Relic Entertainment today announced Operation Sapphire Jackal as Company of Heroes 3’s first major post-launch update. Launching tomorrow, March 28, it is set to introduce daily and weekly challenges, and purchasable cosmetic items, alongside a larger set of changes and fixes to the real-time strategy game.
CoH 3’s Patch 1.1 brings with it randomly selected daily and weekly challenges that players can complete in both multiplayer
and co-op vs AI. Objectives range from killing 50 vehicles with anti-tank guns to gaining 50 veteran ranks with Wehrmacht infantry, and completing them awards Merit, one of two newly-introduced currencies.

Daily challenges refresh at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET/12 AM BST every day, while three new weekly challenges become available on Saturdays at the same time.
Operation Sapphire Jackal also brings new, historically-inspired in-game cosmetics to Company of Heroes 3.
Developer Relic Entertainment promises “a balanced mix of earnable and premium content to ensure that players are free to choose how they wish to engage with post-launch content via an in-game store.”
These items, some of which you can sample in the screenshots above, can be purchased using the premium War Bonds currency – obtainable only by purchasing War Bond Packs – or Merit, a different currency that can be earned by completing in-game challenges.
It is worth keeping in mind that not all items in the store can be acquired using Merit.
CoH 3’s Patch 1.1 also introduces a new set of changes and fixes. The Unique Player Color option is getting updated, assigning allies cool colors and enemies warm colors.
The Gurkha Infantry units are getting a new voiceover, bloom is removed, while the new Exclusive Control Groups option makes the feature work like it did in the series’ older entries, allowing squads to occupy only one control group at a time.
As far as balance goes, nerfs are targeting the US Pathfinders’ early game power, the Desert Afrikakorps’ M13/40 Carro Armato tank, alongside loiters, the latter of which should now be less oppressive.
Company of Heroes 3’s Operation Sapphire Jackal update is slated to launch tomorrow, March 28, at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET/6 PM BST. For more on the real-time strategy game, read our review and this article covering its four launch factions.
